For me, much of 2021 has been about shaking up my photography. I’ve started shooting more with film again and when shooting digital set myself strict parameters (e.g. only use one lens, focus on a single colour) or try new techniques.
I often shoot double or multiple exposures when shooting film as it adds another layer of unpredictability and surprise to the final image; you can’t check whether the exposures are working together as you layer them, everything takes place in your imagination, and how you project that onto the framing of your compositions. I’ve had some beautiful results, part luck I guess, part memory. But I realised I’d never attempted the technique using my DSLR.
In the summer I took a walk across Montreal, from Saint-Henri east towards Rosemont and tried it for the first time. Out of the mess came these few multiple exposures I’m relatively happy with.
