Passerelle Normandie, Longueuil, Quebec

The Passerelle Normandie is a distinctive landmark in Longueuil, crossing Highway 132 and creating an important connection between Marie-Victorin Park on the banks of the St. Lawrence River and LeMoyne Park in Vieux-Longueuil.

Designed by Cardin Julien, the structure is formulated around the concept of universal use. It provides a connection for pedestrians and cyclists while also making the crossing accessible to seniors and people with reduced mobility.

That principle of accessibility is expressed directly in the architecture. Rather than relying solely on stairs or a steep approach, the bridge is reached from both sides by long, looping paths with shallow gradients. Towers at either end contain staircases for pedestrians, creating a contrast between the gently curving access routes and the more vertical elements of the structure.

One of the most interesting features is the belvedere on the river side of the bridge. The viewing platform opens up panoramic views across the St. Lawrence and the surrounding region, turning what could have been a purely functional piece of infrastructure into a place to stop, look and experience the landscape.

From a photographic perspective, the Passerelle Normandie offers an interesting combination of architecture, infrastructure and landscape. Its curves and geometric elements provide strong graphic possibilities, while the surrounding parks, highway and river give the structure a broader context. It is also a good example of how thoughtful design can make an everyday journey more accessible and enjoyable.

I’m particularly interested in photographing architecture in this way: not simply as isolated objects, but as structures that interact with their surroundings and shape the way people experience a place.
